MacBook Won’t Turn On — A Complete Diagnostic Guide

A MacBook is a different animal than a Windows machine — fewer software “failure points,” but when a hardware problem does happen, it more often calls for a specific approach. Here’s the order I follow when working through the diagnostics.

1. Start with the simplest thing — check the cable

Apple power cables (MagSafe and USB-C) have one common point of failure — the end where they bend. Take a look: if you see exposed wire, or if the cable looks “broken” around the adapter, buy a new one. The genuine Apple part is more expensive; quality compatible cables (Anker, RAVPower) are considerably cheaper and no worse.

Test: plug in the cable. If it’s MagSafe, the LED indicator should light up (green if it’s powering, amber if the battery is charging). If it’s USB-C there’s no visual indicator — check on the MacBook itself to see whether the charging icon has appeared in the top right (assuming the screen came on).

2. SMC reset (System Management Controller)

The SMC is the chip that controls power, fans, indicators, and sleep mode. When it gets “stuck,” the MacBook behaves oddly — it won’t turn on, or it turns on and immediately shuts off. It’s reset differently depending on the model:

Intel MacBook (up to 2020)

  1. Turn off the MacBook
  2. Press and hold: Shift + Control + Option + power button for 10 seconds
  3. Release all the keys at the same time
  4. Press the power button normally

An SMC reset solves about 30% of “won’t turn on” cases on Intel MacBooks.

Apple Silicon MacBook (M1, M2, M3, M4)

Apple silicon doesn’t have an SMC in the traditional sense — the system resets itself on restart. If your M-series MacBook won’t turn on, go straight to step 3.

3. PRAM/NVRAM reset (Intel models)

NVRAM stores settings such as sound, screen resolution, and the location of the startup disk. If these settings become corrupted, the MacBook can be stuck on a black screen.

  1. Turn off the MacBook
  2. Press the power button, then IMMEDIATELY hold: Option + Command + P + R
  3. Hold for about 20 seconds (you’ll hear two startup chimes)
  4. Release everything, and the MacBook should start up normally

4. Battery — the most common physical problem

A MacBook battery wears out like any other. After 4–5 years of daily use, it reaches a point where it can no longer hold a voltage. Symptoms:

  • The MacBook won’t turn on without the cable plugged in, even when it shows the battery as “full”
  • It turns on with the cable, then shuts itself off after 10 seconds
  • “Service Recommended” under System Information → Battery

Replacing the battery in a MacBook is harder than in a Windows laptop — the battery is glued to the top case. The price depends on the model (see the price list). Turnaround is 1–2 business days.

5. Display problem (the system works, the screen is black)

It often happens that a MacBook technically “works” — you can hear the fan, even the Apple startup chime — but the screen stays black. That means the problem is in the screen or the LVDS cable.

Test: connect an external monitor via HDMI or a USB-C adapter. If the picture appears on the monitor, the problem is in the laptop’s screen (or its cable). Screen replacement — the price depends on the model (see the price list).

6. Logic board (motherboard) — the worst-case scenario

If none of the above works, the problem is most likely on the logic board itself. The most common causes:

  • Moisture or liquid — any drop of coffee or water is deadly to a MacBook
  • Overheating over the years — the paste has dried out, the chips have been running at high temperatures, the BGA balls have worn out
  • Voltage spike — faulty power fried the power-management chip

Logic board repair on a MacBook is a specialized field. In Belgrade there are a handful of shops that do it (us included) — we use a BGA rework station, a microscope, and an IR camera to detect short circuits. The price depends on the problem (see the price list). Success is around 70% for well-preserved boards, less for ones that have seen liquid.

7. Apple Diagnostics — Apple’s built-in test

Before you conclude that the problem is hardware, run Apple Diagnostics:

Intel models:

  1. Turn on the MacBook and IMMEDIATELY hold D
  2. The system will run the test on its own (5–10 min)
  3. An error code will appear — for example PPN001, NDR002
  4. Look up what it means at apple.com/support → Diagnostics codes

Apple Silicon models:

  1. Turn on the MacBook and IMMEDIATELY hold the power button (5–10 sec)
  2. “Loading startup options” will appear
  3. Press Command + D
  4. The system runs the test

What to do now — our suggested order

  1. Try a different power cable (5 min)
  2. SMC reset (Intel) or just a restart (Apple Silicon)
  3. PRAM/NVRAM reset (Intel)
  4. External monitor test (a visual check of the screen)
  5. Apple Diagnostics
  6. If nothing works — bring it in to us
