Laptop Hinge Repair — Belgrade

Hinge and Lid Mechanism Repair — When Your Laptop Starts to Wobble

The laptop hinges carry the entire top section — the screen, the camera, the microphone. After years of opening and closing (10,000+ cycles), the plastic of the screen bezel begins to crack around the hinge. At first you notice a small crack; a few months later the whole top frame wobbles loosely — and then it presses on the cable that runs to the screen, and at that point the laptop can no longer be used.

How to Tell If You Have This Problem

  • Cracked plastic around the hinge (you can see a line, and sometimes a piece shifts under your finger)
  • Opening the laptop produces a “click” or a “grinding” sound
  • The screen won’t hold the angle you set it to — it slides forward or back
  • Gray or blue lines have appeared on the screen when you open it (the LVDS cable is being tugged)
  • You see a small plastic “piece” hanging on the inside (this often happens with the HP Pavilion)

If any of these symptoms are present, don’t wait. If you keep opening the laptop with the crack there, the next step up is a snapped LVDS cable or a broken screen frame — and the repair then costs significantly more.

Exactly What We Do — Three Scenarios

1. Cracked plastic only (the simplest and most common)

We separate the top screen bezel and put the broken piece back in place using JB Weld or an adhesive epoxy made for plastic. If the damage has become beyond repair over time, we order a new screen bezel. We confirm the exact price after a free diagnostic, before the repair.

2. Replacing the hinges themselves

Metal hinges wear out over time — they become stiff or snap. The Lenovo IdeaPad, HP Pavilion, and Dell Inspiron 15 are the most common models where we replace hinges. We usually have hinges in stock, or they arrive within 1–3 days. You get an estimate after a free diagnostic.

3. The complete lid mechanism (the heavy-duty case)

If both the frame and the hinges are broken, and possibly the base around the mechanism as well — this calls for a complete replacement of the upper screen “housing.” Turnaround is 3–5 days until the parts arrive. This is a rare case, but it does happen (most often an Asus laptop that has been dropped from a height).

Questions

Does an epoxy repair hold up for a long time?

Yes, if it’s done properly. Our repair lasts 3–5 years on average, which is longer than the laptop tends to survive anyway. The key is the type of epoxy (JB Weld Plastic Bonder), the application technique, and 12–24 hours of curing. If it fails again within a few months, we repair it for free.

Can I do it myself with “super glue”?

Honestly — we don’t recommend it. Cyanoacrylate (super glue) is brittle — it will crack again within a few weeks, because the hinges are constantly making micro-movements. Epoxy made specifically for plastic has the flexibility it needs. It’s the difference between a repair that holds for a month and one that holds for years.

How long does the repair take?

Typically 1–2 business days for cracked plastic (24 hours of curing). For a hinge replacement — 2–3 days if the parts are in stock, 5–7 days if we have to order them. For urgent cases (a work laptop), we try to find an original part in local shops around Belgrade — that shortens it to 1 day.

Do you work on an old laptop from 2014?

Yes, but with a caveat. The plastic on older laptops is brittle from aging. The repair may hold for a shorter time — 1–2 years instead of 3–5. It’s worth considering: if the laptop is still functionally good, the repair buys you another year or two. If it has already had plenty of other problems, you might want to think about a new one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does laptop hinge repair cost?
Diagnostics are free, and we give you the exact price after we've had a look, because it depends on whether only the hinge cracked or the mounting point inside the chassis is damaged too. Ballpark prices are in our price list. Once we open the laptop and see the real state of it, we tell you the price before we start anything.
Is a broken hinge worth repairing, or should I just buy a new laptop?
Usually it's worth it. If the laptop is otherwise fine, a hinge repair costs far less than a new machine — and if you leave it, a wobbly hinge eventually tears the screen's ribbon cable and cracks the bezel, so the repair gets more expensive. That's why it's smart to sort it out as soon as you notice the lid opening stiffly or creaking.
How long does hinge repair take?
If we have the right hinge or bracket in stock, often the same or the next day. On some models the hinge or the plastic mount has to be ordered, and in that case we tell you a realistic deadline up front. That also includes gluing and reinforcing a cracked mount where that's needed.
Do you use original or replacement hinges?
It depends on the model. Where it's still available, we fit the original hinge for that laptop; where the original is no longer made, we use proven aftermarket parts that match the mechanics. Either way we tell you exactly what we're fitting, and the work comes with a warranty.
How do I get my laptop with a broken hinge to you?
For private customers, a courier picks the laptop up at your address and brings it back when it's done, or you drop it off at one of our three shops in Belgrade (Arena, Piramida, Centar). One tip: don't force the lid open while the hinge is loose, because that can damage the screen as well.
