How to find your exact Dell model (Service Tag)
Dell’s Service Tag is 7 characters (letters + digits) and it is the fastest way to learn everything about a laptop. Where it is:
- The label on the bottom of the laptop — the line marked “Service Tag” or “ST” (e.g. 7X2K9L3)

cmd→wmic bios get serialnumber(that is the Service Tag too) - Typed into dell.com/support it gives the exact model and all the parts

The most common Dell laptop faults
A swollen battery (XPS, some Inspiron/Latitude)
A well-known problem, especially on the XPS: after a couple of years the battery swells, “puffs up” and pushes the trackpad from below — the trackpad pops out or stops clicking, and the chassis bends. A swollen battery is also a safety risk — it should be replaced as soon as possible and the laptop should not be used like that.
Coil whine and overheating (XPS)
The XPS tends to “whine” (a high-pitched sound from the board under load) and to run hot because it is thin. Cleaning and a repaste help with the heat; for coil whine we check where it is coming from.
Hinges and chassis (Inspiron)
The cheaper Inspiron models have plastic hinges that give way, much like with other brands. It is repairable.
DC jack and a slow HDD
Older Inspiron/Vostro units with an HDD get a new lease of life from an SSD. The charging connector is also repaired separately when it works loose.
