Desktop Computer Cleaning

Desktop Computer Dust Cleaning

While it runs, a desktop computer pulls in air through its fans, and dust comes in along with that air. After a year or two, a layer builds up that clogs the heatsinks, so the computer runs hot, the fans roar, and the system starts to “cut out” in the middle of a game or your work. That’s not a fault — it’s a sign the case needs a thorough cleaning.

Most common symptoms / when you need this

  • The fans spin at full speed and make noise even when you’re not doing anything demanding
  • The computer shuts down or restarts on its own, usually when it heats up (games, video editing, rendering)
  • The case is warm to the touch and the air coming out of it is hot
  • Games stutter and drop in FPS after a few minutes — the processor and graphics card throttle down because of overheating
  • You can see dust buildup on the vents and fans when you look inside the case
  • It’s been more than a year or two since the last cleaning, and the computer sits in a carpeted room or next to a pet

Exactly what we do

We open the side panel of the case and use compressed air to blow the dust off all the heatsinks, fans, the power supply, and the motherboard itself. We hold the fan blades so they don’t spin freely while we blow them, since that can damage them. If the case has dust filters, we take them out and wash them.

The most important part when it comes to overheating is the thermal paste. It carries heat from the processor to the heatsink, and over time it dries out and cracks — that’s when the processor “cooks” even though the heatsink is clean. We remove the old heatsink, wipe the dried-out paste off both the processor and the heatsink, and apply fresh, quality paste. For graphics cards that overheat we do the same, by arrangement.

At the end we check that every fan is working and measure the temperatures under load, to make sure the computer is genuinely cooled down and not just wiped off on the outside. If we notice a fan grinding or a power supply on its way out, we tell you in advance.

How it works

Diagnostics are free if the device doesn’t need to be opened up — describe how the computer behaves and we’ll know right away whether it’s dust, paste, or something else.

Desktop cases are heavy and awkward to carry, so you don’t have to lug them around yourself: a courier picks up the device and brings it back once it’s done. If it’s easier for you, drop it off at one of our locations — we have three in Belgrade: near Arena, in New Belgrade by Piramida, and downtown by the Botanical Garden. After the inspection we tell you exactly what’s needed and how long it will take, and the price is in the price list — with no surprises later. We don’t do anything until we agree on the job.

Why choose us

We clean computers and replace thermal paste every day, on everything from office machines to gaming rigs, so we know how much paste goes on which processor and how to take off a heatsink without breaking anything. We use quality paste, not the cheapest kind that dries out in a couple of months. We back the work we do with a warranty, and we tell you the price and the procedure up front. If, along with the cleaning, you also need a general check-up of the machine, that’s what desktop repair and laptop repair are for.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a thermal paste replacement or just a cleaning?

If the computer is just noisy and warm, cleaning off the dust is often enough. If it still heats up or shuts down even after cleaning, the paste is almost certainly dried out and needs replacing. We assess that by measuring temperatures before and after, so you don’t pay for what you don’t need.

How often should a desktop be cleaned?

Roughly once a year for an average home, and more often if you have a pet, a carpet in the room, or keep the computer on the floor where it takes in more dust. For gaming machines under heavy load, it’s worth a look every six months.

Can I just blow the dust out myself with a spray can?

On the surface, yes, and it does help. But a spray can won’t replace dried-out thermal paste, and that’s the most common cause of overheating in older computers — for that you have to take the heatsink off. You can follow your repair progress through the status check.
