You plug the charger in and the percentage just sits there, or stubbornly keeps dropping. Or Windows puts that familiar “plugged in, not charging” in the corner. We see this almost every day, and in most cases the culprit is neither expensive nor dramatic. Let’s go through it in order, from the most common to the rarest, so you can see what to check before you even start thinking about a repair shop.
What the symptoms look like
The symptoms vary, and they say a lot about where the problem is:
- The percentage sits at 0% or won’t go up even though the charger is plugged in.
- “Plugged in, not charging” — the laptop runs off the mains, but it isn’t topping the battery up.
- The light on the charger doesn’t come on when you put it in the socket.
- It charges only while the laptop is off, and the moment Windows boots — it stops.
- You have to wiggle or hold the cable at a certain angle before it starts charging.
Causes, from the most common to the rarest
1. The charger or the cable. By far the most common reason. Adapters die, and cables break right where they enter the housing, especially on laptops that get carried around in a bag every day. If you have another working charger (same voltage and connector), try it. This is the first thing we do too.
2. The DC jack on the laptop. The socket you plug the charger into. Over time it works loose, the solder joints crack, or the jack starts wobbling physically. The sign is classic: the cable has to sit at an angle, or the laptop charges and then stops when you nudge it. A new charger won’t fix this — it needs a repair.
3. A worn-out battery. Batteries have a lifespan. After a few years the capacity drops so far that the battery only lasts a few minutes on a charge, or it reports “plugged in, not charging” because the cells are on their last legs. The laptop works normally on the mains, but the moment you pull the cable out — it shuts down.
4. The battery driver or software (Windows). Sometimes Windows itself gets it wrong. The “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” driver can get confused after an update, so the laptop thinks the battery is in some odd state.
5. The motherboard. Rare, but it happens — the charging circuit on the board gives up. This is the least likely scenario, and it is only diagnosed once everything above has been ruled out.
What you can check yourself
- Another charger. Borrow one, or try a spare. If everything works with a different charger — the adapter was the problem, end of story.
- Look at the jack and the light. Is the light on the adapter on? Does the jack on the laptop wobble when you gently move the cable? If it charges only at an angle — that is a clear sign it is the jack.
- Battery report for a quick check. Open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. Windows creates an HTML report where you can see “Design Capacity” (the factory rating) and “Full Charge Capacity” (what it holds now). If the current figure has fallen to a third or less — the battery is worn out.
- Remove the battery driver. In Device Manager, under “Batteries”, right-click “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” and choose Uninstall. Restart the laptop — Windows puts it back on its own. It is harmless, and it can clear up charging that is stuck in software.
When it is time for a repair
If you have tried another charger and removing the driver and it still won’t charge — don’t dig any deeper on your own, because from here it means taking the laptop apart. The two most common outcomes:
- The jack is loose, or it charges only at an angle → repairing or replacing the DC jack. We do that as part of laptop repair, opening the laptop up and soldering in a new jack.
- The battery report shows the capacity has collapsed and the laptop runs only on the mains → laptop battery replacement. We fit the right battery and the laptop holds a charge without the cable again.
