Your SSD Is Starting to Fail — How to Spot It and Save Your Data Before It Dies

The SSD revolutionized laptops and computers — boot in 10 seconds, programs that open instantly, dramatically longer battery life. But it has one nasty trait most people don’t know about: it fails suddenly, without warning. An HDD will hiss and click for days before it quits. An SSD works perfectly right up until the day it simply won’t turn on.

In the shop, on average we see at least one case of a completely dead SSD every week. In 70% of those cases the owner had no backup. The data was lost for good — photos, documents, years’ worth of projects.

This article is about how to make sure you’re not in that 70%.

1. Understanding — how long does an SSD last?

An SSD has a limited number of write cycles. A typical consumer 500 GB SSD is rated for around 150–300 TBW (Terabytes Written) — that’s 150,000 to 300,000 GB of data written.

For a normal user that means 5–10 years. For someone constantly doing video editing or working with large databases — 2–3 years. For servers writing logs 24/7 — a few months, unless they’re enterprise SSDs.

From experience: the vast majority of failures happen between the 3rd and 7th year of use. If your SSD is older than 5 years, it’s time to get serious about monitoring and backup.

2. Signs your SSD is dying — what to watch for

The system gets slower for no reason

Files take longer to open, programs load a little slower than they did a few months ago. Not dramatically — gradually. That’s the SSD starting to reroute around “weaker” cells and taking longer to write.

Random freezes

The system suddenly locks up for 10–30 seconds, then continues. Often the mouse still works but the cursor is “thinking.” This is the SSD trying to read data from a damaged cell.

“File or directory is corrupted” errors

You try to open a file and Windows tells you it’s corrupted. Another file from the same folder opens fine. Gradually more and more files start having problems.

The drive shows up as “Read-only”

The worst sign. At a certain point in the failure process, an SSD switches into read-only mode as a protective measure — you can read but not write. If this has happened, back up immediately, because it can fail completely within the next few days.

3. How to check your SSD’s health — SMART monitoring

Every SSD has a built-in self-monitoring system called SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). It tracks:

  • Power-on hours — how many hours the drive has run
  • Total bytes written — how much data has been written
  • Wear leveling count — how much “usable” memory is left
  • Reallocated sectors — how many cells have already failed and been remapped

Download CrystalDiskInfo (free, from the official site crystalmark.info). Open it and you’ll see the Health Status:

  • Good (blue) — all OK
  • Caution (yellow) — some indicator is showing a problem; keep an eye on it and make backups
  • Bad (red) — the drive is in the process of failing; back up and replace it right away

From experience, if you see “Caution,” you’ve got another 2–6 months of normal operation. “Bad” means anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

4. Backup strategy — a real-world recommendation

The “3-2-1 rule” from the IT industry:

  • 3 copies of your data
  • 2 different media types (disk + cloud)
  • 1 copy off-site (cloud, or at someone else’s house)

Practical setup for a normal user

  1. Main drive (the SSD in your laptop) — your working copies
  2. External drive (USB HDD or SSD) — periodic backup, once a week
  3. Cloud — Google Drive (15 GB free), OneDrive (5 GB free), iCloud (5 GB free), then buy more as needed

Practical setup for a business

  1. NAS device (Synology, QNAP) with 2–4 disks in RAID — automatic backup of all workstations
  2. Cloud backup (Backblaze, Synology C2, or Wasabi) — an encrypted copy of the NAS in the cloud

5. What to do if your SSD is dying — and how to replace it

If Health Status shows Caution

  1. Immediately back up all important data (external drive + cloud)
  2. Order a replacement SSD (Samsung 980 Pro, Crucial MX500, Kingston KC3000 — all good options)
  3. Over the next 1–2 weeks, do the migration: clone your system from the old SSD to the new one (the shop does this, price in the price list), or do a clean install of Windows on the new drive plus manually moving your data over

If Health shows Bad or the system won’t turn on

  1. Don’t keep forcing it to power on repeatedly — that can destroy even what could still be saved
  2. Bring it into the shop right away
  3. We can attempt recovery — it usually succeeds in about 80% of cases if the SSD’s electronics are still alive
  4. If the controller has failed, we send it to a specialized lab (more expensive, but often successful)

6. What to expect

A new SSD can be bought in a store or online (SATA and NVMe models, 500 GB up to 1 TB and beyond). For cloning your system from the old drive to the new one and for data recovery — prices are in the price list. Recovery at a specialized lab (when the controller has failed) is only done for truly important data and is billed separately.

7. The main takeaway — backup is cheaper than recovery

Backup software is free (Windows has built-in “File History,” macOS has “Time Machine”), and an external drive plus a cloud subscription are a small cost compared to what you stand to lose.

Recovering data from a failed SSD in a lab is expensive and not guaranteed. Do the math for yourself.
