Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) — causes, reading error codes, and how to fix it

The Blue Screen of Death — that classic blue window with “Your PC ran into a problem” — is the most dreaded sight for every Windows user. It appears out of nowhere, the system restarts, and if it keeps happening, every further session is a risk.

At the shop we see an average of 4-6 BSOD cases a week. From experience, here’s what is most often behind it and how it gets fixed.

1. Before we begin — photograph the screen

The next time you see a blue screen, the first thing to do is take a photo with your phone. Down at the bottom it shows the error code (e.g. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED). That code is the diagnostic clue that tells me, back at the shop, what’s going on in 80% of cases. Without the code, we’re shooting in the dark.

2. The most common causes in our experience

RAM — faulty memory modules (40% of cases)

The most frequent culprit. RAM can fail gradually — your laptop works fine for years, then one day a memory module starts losing bits and the system doesn’t know what to do. The test is simple — Windows has a built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic. Type “mdsched” into Start, restart, and the system will test your RAM.

If the test reports errors, the RAM needs to be replaced (the price is in the price list, depending on size and type — DDR4 or DDR5). If the laptop has two slots, it’s often enough to replace just one module.

Drivers — especially the graphics and network card (25%)

After a Windows update, drivers fail to sync. An NVIDIA or AMD graphics card is the most common culprit for VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE and similar errors. The fix: download the latest drivers from the NVIDIA/AMD/Intel website (NEVER from the “driver download” pages Google throws at you), and install them in “clean install” mode.

If you’re not comfortable with it — call the shop. Drivers are delicate, and a wrong installation can make things worse.

Overheating — a laptop that hasn’t been cleaned in a while (20%)

This shows up especially in the summer. The laptop overheats, the CPU throttles its frequency, the system becomes unstable, BSOD. If you notice the laptop is hot as a frying pan, the fan runs constantly, and it starts throwing BSODs — it most likely needs a dust cleaning + fresh thermal paste. It takes about an hour. After that, the problem disappears.

SSD or HDD on the verge of failure (10%)

A drive that’s beginning to fail causes random BSODs. A typical code is CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. To check: download the free CrystalDiskInfo, run it, and look at the “Health Status” for your drive. If it says “Caution” or “Bad”, back up your data immediately and replace the drive.

Other (5%)

A faulty power supply (PSU), a broken motherboard, a BIOS that needs updating, viruses that have taken over the system partition. These are cases that call for more detailed diagnostics at the shop.

3. What to do before calling the service

  1. Back up your data. If the system can get into Windows for even 5 minutes, move your important files to an external drive or the cloud (Google Drive, OneDrive). A BSOD isn’t always terminal, but better safe than sorry.
  2. Write down the error code from the photo of the screen.
  3. Run Memory Diagnostic (mdsched in Start) and CrystalDiskInfo. Look at the results.
  4. Remember when it started. After a Windows update? After installing something new? After a knock? This information is key to the diagnosis.

4. When to call the service

Call if:

  • The BSOD keeps happening several times a day
  • The system can no longer get into Windows
  • It started after overheating or a knock
  • You’re not comfortable with Memory Diagnostic or driver installation
  • You have important data you haven’t backed up

The most important message: don’t ignore recurring BSODs. A system that crashes now and then is signaling that something is wrong. The longer you wait, the greater the risk of data loss.
