Most laptops that come in for repair suffer from just a handful of common faults. Here’s what we see most often, how to recognise what’s going on, and when a repair is worth it — and when it’s smarter to think about an upgrade.
The laptop is slow
Usually it isn’t “old”, it just needs an SSD and a bit more RAM. On top of that, viruses and a cluttered system are a common cause — fixed by cleanup or a reinstall. For little money you get a machine that boots in seconds.
It heats up and shuts down
Dust and old thermal paste = overheating. Cleaning and fresh paste fix most of it. If it still shuts down, we check the power supply and the motherboard.
Cracked or black screen
The panel can be replaced for any model — see laptop screen replacement. It’s important to tell whether the fault is in the panel or the graphics; we establish that through diagnostics.
The battery won’t hold a charge
After a few years that’s normal. Before replacing it we check it isn’t just a settings issue — then, if needed, we replace the battery with a warranty.
Won’t turn on
It can be the charger (cheap) or the motherboard. Don’t force it — bring it in for a free diagnosis and we’ll see what it is.
