Fixing Bent Pins on CPUs and Motherboards
You were building a PC, the CPU went into the socket at an angle, the cooler pulled it along… and now you’re staring at a row of bent pins and a computer that won’t power on. It happens even to experienced builders. The worst thing you can do at that moment is straighten them with a needle “by eye” — a pin snaps by the second or third bend. We straighten pins under magnification, with a specialized tool, pin by pin, and test right afterward to make sure everything works.
How pins get bent in the first place
Nine out of ten cases we see are one of these situations:
- The CPU went into the socket at an angle and was pushed down to make it “seat” — a classic on a first build.
- Removing the cooler: the thermal paste had set, the CPU came out stuck to the heatsink instead of staying in the socket, then fell onto the desk or into the case.
- A screw or screwdriver fell into an open socket while mounting the board in the case.
- A used CPU or motherboard bought as “tested, everything works” — but arrived with bent pins from shipping or from before.
- Cleaning old paste over the pins, dry, with a paper towel.
Intel or AMD — where the pins are
On Intel (LGA sockets — 1151, 1200, 1700…) the pins are in the socket on the motherboard. They’re tiny, densely packed, and the easiest to damage — and the hardest to straighten. On AMD up to the AM4 generation (Ryzen 1000–5000) the pins are on the CPU itself — they’re thicker, so straightening has a better chance of success. AM5 (Ryzen 7000 and newer) switched to LGA, so the pins are back in the socket, just like on Intel.
What this means for you: if the pins are on the CPU — you only need to bring in the processor. If they’re bent in the socket — we need the motherboard, or you can bring the whole computer and we’ll take it out.
Why not to try it yourself
- A pin snaps on the second or third bend — the metal fatigues. Every “let me just try” uses up the one attempt a pin gets.
- The mechanical-pencil trick from YouTube only works on AMD PGA pins that are slightly bent. In an LGA socket a pencil has no business — the contacts are too small and spring-loaded.
- A single broken pin in the socket usually means a dead board or a dead memory channel — worse damage than what you started with.
- If thermal paste got in among the pins, straightening without cleaning first just presses it in deeper.
How we do it
- Inspection under magnification — we map which pins are bent, how much, and in which direction.
- If there’s paste or dirt — cleaning with isopropyl alcohol, using the proper procedure, before any bending.
- Alignment with a fine tool, row by row, until every row is optically straight from every angle.
- Seating test: the CPU must drop in without any resistance, with the lever closing normally.
- Test: power-on, BIOS, checking that all memory channels work (bent pins in the corner of the socket often “eat” a RAM slot), then a short stability test.
If a pin is broken, we tell you right away and honestly what that means: some pins are spare or ground, so the board runs fine without them; others are critical. We don’t charge for attempts that have no chance.
Price — after inspection, before the work
The cost depends on how many pins are bent and how badly. That’s why we inspect first, then tell you the exact price — before we touch anything. The inspection commits you to nothing.
How to pack your CPU or motherboard
This is where damage worse than the original can happen, so two minutes of care is worth it:
- CPU: in its original plastic clamshell if you have it. If not — a hard little box, CPU pins facing up, secured so it can’t rattle around. Never in a pocket, never just wrapped in foil and put in an envelope.
- Motherboard: an antistatic bag (or, at worst, a clean plastic bag) plus a cardboard box. Nothing should press on the socket — if you have the plastic socket cover, put it back on.
- Bring it to any of our three shops — or a courier picks it up at your address and returns it when it’s done.
