You are working away, the battery says 35%, and the laptop just dies — no warning, as if someone pulled the plug. Or you unplug the charger and twenty minutes later it’s already asking for a socket. We see this every day and it almost always comes down to three things: the battery is worn out, the percentage is badly calibrated, or the laptop is overheating and shutting itself down to protect itself. The good news is that you can check quite a lot of this yourself before you even start thinking about a repair shop.
What the usual symptoms look like
Let’s see if you’re describing the same thing we look at every day:
- It shuts down at 20-40% with no warning — no “battery almost empty” message, the screen simply goes black. A classic sign that the battery cannot deliver the current even though it claims it still has some.
- It runs flat quickly — it used to last five hours, now it barely manages an hour and a half with the same use.
- The percentage jumps up and down — it drops from 60% to 15% in a couple of minutes, then “climbs back” to 40%. That is a wrong estimate, not the real state.
- It only works on the charger — pull the cable out and it dies within a second. At that point the battery is practically dead.
What actually causes this
The usual culprit is worn-out cells. A battery has a limited number of charge cycles and after two or three years the capacity drops noticeably. That’s normal wear, not a fault — but there comes a point where putting up with it stops making sense.
The second common case is a badly calibrated percentage. The battery is still physically fine, but the system miscalculates how much is left in it. Hence those jumps, 60 → 15 → 40. Sometimes it sorts itself out over a few full cycles.
The third one, and the most underrated, is overheating. When a laptop fills up with dust and the paste on the processor dries out, the temperature climbs and it shuts down to protect itself — and you think the battery is to blame. The giveaway: it dies while doing something demanding (a game, video, several programs at once), the fan is screaming, the case is hot. The battery often has nothing to do with it.
Less often, but it does happen: software chewing through the processor in the background and draining the battery (a badly optimised app, a virus, too many startup programs), and rarest of all — a problem with the motherboard or the power circuit. Don’t try to diagnose that last one yourself, but it really is a rare scenario.
Checks you can do yourself
Before you change anything, take five minutes and look at the real state of the battery.
- Generate a battery report. In Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and type powercfg /batteryreport. It creates an HTML file (it tells you where it saved it). Open that file.
- Compare two numbers. Find Design Capacity (the factory capacity) and Full Charge Capacity (what it takes now). If Full Charge Capacity has fallen below roughly 60-70% of Design Capacity, the battery is seriously worn. An example: 50,000 mWh from the factory, 22,000 mWh now — that is around 44%, so the battery is due for replacement.
- Try calibrating it. If the numbers look decent but the percentage is all over the place, charge it to 100%, leave it plugged in for another hour, then use it until it shuts down on its own, and charge it to 100% again. After a couple of cycles like that the estimate often settles down.
- Check whether it is overheating. If it dies under load and the case is hot, take your mind off the battery and suspect dust. Install a temperature tool (HWMonitor) and see whether the processor goes past 90-95°C — if it does, the shutdown is a protective measure, not a battery problem.
When it is time for a repair shop
If the battery report shows heavy wear (Full Charge Capacity well below the factory figure), no amount of calibration will cure it — the laptop needs a battery replacement. For most models we find a suitable one and do the job within a day. Prices differ from model to model, so rather than throwing a figure at you off the top of my head, have a look at the price list.
If it is overheating and dying under load, the battery probably is not the problem — that calls for cleaning the dust out of the laptop and replacing the thermal paste. After that the temperatures go back to normal and the shutdowns stop.

How do I tell whether the laptop is shutting down because of the battery or because of overheating?
If it dies at random and works normally on the charger — suspect the battery. If it dies under load, the fan is screaming and the case is hot — that’s overheating and it needs cleaning, not a battery.
What if the percentage jumps around but the laptop otherwise works fine?
